The Shiva Sutras are ancient aphorisms that help you surmount any negativity. They change the mind\u2019s tendency to hold on to the negative and overlook the positive. They connect us with the three aspects of Shiva within us:\u00a0\n\nSatyam, the truth\n\tShivam, the goodness\n\tSundaram, the beauty.\nThey uplift you to these aspects even when life is not rosy. Even when you are bitter with heartache or failure.\n\n\n\nWhat are sutras?\n\nA sutra is described as that which contains the essence and expresses the full meaning in a few words. In order to fly a kite and guide it from the ground, we need a thin thread. While this thread stays on the ground, the kite soars in the air. That thread is a sutra. Acting as a link between the earth and the sky, between humanity and Divinity, a sutra lets our life soar higher and expand into the vastness of infinity. A sutra helps you find happiness in life.\n\nThe 77 Shiva Sutras help drive you home in different ways and in different situations. Following are four of my favorite Shiva Sutras:\n\n1) Udyamo Bhairava\n\n\u00a0Meaning: when you put in full effort, then you can experience completeness. In other words, whatever you do, do it with 100% effort.\n\nI\u2019d like to recount an instance when this sutra was particularly helpful.\n\nI was particularly unhappy when I began my career as a writer. But this one sutra changed my relationship with my work. I started enjoying writing and eventually found writing jobs that were interesting. By implementing the sutra regularly, I realized I could feel great irrespective of what I was doing. Also, the sense of fulfillment that comes with doing anything 100% is phenomenal.\n\n\n\n2)\u00a0Svamatra nirmananapadayati\n\nMeaning: everyone is responsible for raising their own level of consciousness.\n\nAt the end of a bad day, my mind often ends up blaming people or circumstances, which only aggravates negative emotions in my mind. In such times, this sutra comes in handy as it pins down the myth of \u2018others being the reason for my misery\u2019 in a second. Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar says, \u201cEach person is responsible for becoming happier or sadder.\u00a0 You yourself have to uplift your consciousness.\u201d With that realization, I find the bravery to face people and situations as they are.\u00a0\n\nI have found chants, yoga, meditation and breathing techniques like Sudarshan Kriya as great ways to raise my consciousness.\n\n3) Vismayo yoga bhumikah\n\nMeaning: wonder is the basis of union. (Union refers to the union of the mind and Self.)\n\nWhenever I feel frustrated, I make it a point to be with nature. The wafting leaves, fluttering butterflies or the stars put me in wonder instantly. With that, frustrations are forgotten and all is good again.\n\nGurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar says, \u201cA consciousness in wonder is the foundation for yoga. Out of this consciousness, innocence is born.\u201d\u00a0\n\n\n\nWhat science says about wonder?\n\nAccording to research, wonder improves your physical and mental health. It reduces the risk of:\n\ndepression\n\theart disease\u00a0\n\ttype 2 diabetes\n\tarthritis.\n4) Nartaka atma\n\nMeaning: the Self is a dancer.An excerpt from Gurudev\u2019s commentary on the sutra:\n\n\u201cA good dancer does not replay yesterday\u2019s expressions today. Yesterday he expressed yesterday\u2019s feelings, and today he expresses new feelings. New feelings emerge in everyone\u2019s mind, but what do we do? We mix old feelings with today\u2019s new feelings. Payasam, a sweet drink has been prepared fresh, but old spoiled beans have been added to it. It would be fine if it were just from yesterday, but you add in what is a year old!\u201d\n\nThis is my favorite sutra as it has often given me the strength to let go when it has seemed the hardest.\n\nThe above are just 5 sutras which help me whenever I feel down.
