The fastest way to collect essence in Hollow Knight is to defeat the dream bosses. Even then, the little knight will need to collect more essence to get the awoken dream nail. Alternate versions of bosses. More challenging than the original fight. Some can be accessed by Dream Nailing their corpse; defeating these dream bosses awards a large sum of Essence. Others can be found elsewhere in Hallownest after the original fight. A few more boss variations can also be found inside Godhome.
Failed Champion, Grey Prince Zote, Lost Kin, Nightmare King Grimm, Soul Tyrant and White Defender are considered "Dream Bosses" and occur within the Dream Realm. This means that the Knight does not actually die during a dream boss battle. If the Knight dies, they simply wake up next to the point of entry. This means several things:
The two best ways to get Essence are defeating bosses and warriors in their dreams. You can only access the Dream Bosses after defeating the bosses themselves, and their dream counterparts are stronger and faster in the Dream Realm.

Anyone that has played through Hollow Knight will know that it's hard enough taking on just two enemies at a time. However, this boss battle ramps up the difficulty by forcing you to try and best six different knights.
After i got the mantis claw ability i decided to inspect the crying/mourning in the room after the false knight fight and saw the dead maggot surrounded by his friends. When dreamnailing it i was lead to another false knight fight but i decided to not do it yet. Is there a benefit to defeating them again? Do they get revived?
A few different bosses have dream versions that can be challenged using the dream nail. These dream bosses are harder versions of the corresponding regular bosses, and the reward for defeating them is a relatively large amount of the essence that the Moth Seer asks for. The wiki has more information about dream bosses (spoiler warning).
The Failed Champion is the dream variant of one of the game's early bosses, the False Knight. After obtaining the Dream Nail, players can fight the Failed Champion by breaking the wall above the False Knight's arena and using the Dream Nail on the boss' body.
There are a lot of things that fans are excited about in Hollow Knight's sequel, and that includes seeing one of the original game's bosses, Hornet. Players face the swift needle- and thread-wielding boss in two locations, first at Greenpath and again in Godhome.
The Soul Master can be quite difficult to overcome, as he teleports across the area, uses explosive attacks, and is incredibly tough. While the dream variant of the Soul Master is faster and tougher, it uses the same attacks, which makes it significantly easier for players who have already beaten the boss.
This guide aims to cover details regarding essence collection in Hollow Knight. In particular, this guide will give the basics of dream nail use to collect essence, the total (known) essence in the game, the locations where you collect essence, and the rewards the Seer gives for reaching certain essence amounts.
Dream Bosses are harder variants of boss fights you previously beat in the game. Once you acquire the Dream Nail, Dream Bosses are indicated by the presence of Dream effects over their bodies. Upon using the Dream Nail on the boss corpse, you will be transported into the Dream realm after which you need to perform some platforming to reach the boss room. Once the boss is defeated, either A) a spirit will spawn above the boss corpse in the real world and interacting with the spirit will give dialogue, after which you will be rewarded with essence or B) you will immediately receive the essence after being ejected from the dream realm.
There are 5 dream bosses in the game which give a total of 1600 essence (with 300 essence missable) as of v1.2.2.1. (Note: The Nightmare King boss obeys the above rules but does not award essence for winning the battle, so it is excluded from the list. The Radiance boss only obeys the first rule and does not award essence for winning the battle, so it is also excluded from the list.)
