Discovering the Humanities: A Review of the 2nd Edition by Henry M. Sayre

The humanities are the disciplines that explore the human condition, culture, and creativity through various forms of expression, such as art, literature, music, philosophy, and history. Studying the humanities can enrich our lives, broaden our perspectives, and foster our appreciation of diversity and beauty.

One of the challenges of teaching and learning the humanities is to find a way to connect the past with the present, to show how the works of different times and places reflect and influence each other, and to reveal how they are relevant to our own experiences and values. This is the goal of Discovering the Humanities, a textbook by Henry M. Sayre, a distinguished professor of art history at Oregon State University-Cascades Campus.

The 2nd edition of Discovering the Humanities, published by Pearson in 2012, is an updated and revised version of the original edition that came out in 2010. It covers the major periods, styles, and figures of the humanities from prehistory to the present, with a global and multicultural approach. It also includes new features, such as a chapter on contemporary art and culture, a timeline that highlights key events and works in each chapter, and a digital platform called MyArtsLab that provides interactive learning tools and resources for students and instructors.

The book is organized into six parts: The Ancient World; The Medieval Era; The Renaissance; The Age of Encounter; The Modern Era; and The Contemporary Moment. Each part consists of several chapters that focus on specific themes, regions, or movements within the humanities. For example, Part One covers topics such as the origins of human expression, ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt, classical Greece and Rome, early India and China, and early Christian and Byzantine art. Each chapter begins with a quote from a primary source that relates to the main theme of the chapter, followed by an introduction that sets the context and provides an overview of the main points. Then, each chapter presents a series of sections that explore different aspects or examples of the humanities in that period or region. Each section includes high-quality images of artworks or artifacts, accompanied by captions that explain their significance and connection to the theme. The book also provides definitions of key terms in the margins, as well as questions for critical thinking and reflection at the end of each section.

The book is written in a clear and engaging style that makes the humanities accessible and interesting for students. Sayre uses vivid descriptions, anecdotes, comparisons, and analyses to convey his passion and expertise for the subject. He also draws connections between different works, cultures, and periods to show how they influence each other and how they relate to our own lives. For example, in Chapter 14: The Baroque Age: Glamour and Grandiosity (Part Four), he compares Bernini's sculpture Ecstasy of Saint Teresa with Hitchcock's film Vertigo to illustrate how both works use dramatic effects to create a sense of emotional intensity and suspense. He also discusses how Baroque art reflects the political, religious, and social changes that occurred in Europe during the 17th century.

In conclusion, Discovering the Humanities is a comprehensive and captivating introduction to the humanities that covers a wide range of topics, regions, and periods with a global and multicultural perspective. It also offers new features and resources that enhance its pedagogical value and appeal for students and instructors. It is a suitable textbook for introductory courses in humanities or general education at college level. ec8f644aee
